When a potential client in The Gambia searches for a professional service online, one of the first things they look at is reviews. A business with ten positive reviews and a four-star rating will almost always attract more attention than one with no reviews at all — even if the second business is objectively better.
Reviews on your Google Business Profile serve two purposes. They build trust with potential clients who have never worked with you before. And they signal to Google that your business is active and credible, which can improve your visibility in local search results.
Getting more reviews is not complicated. However, it does require a deliberate approach.
Ask at the Right Moment
The most effective time to ask a client for a review is immediately after a positive experience — when the work is complete, the problem has been solved, or the service has been delivered successfully. At that moment, the client is most likely to feel good about the relationship and most willing to take a few minutes to share their experience.
Waiting too long reduces the likelihood of getting a review. The positive feeling fades, other priorities take over, and the moment passes. Building the ask into your standard client follow-up process ensures it happens consistently rather than only when you remember.
Make It Easy
Many clients who would happily leave a review never do so simply because they are not sure how. Reducing the friction matters.
Google provides a direct review link for every Business Profile. Share this link directly with clients — via WhatsApp, email, or SMS — so they can leave a review in one or two taps without having to search for your profile. The easier you make the process, the higher the response rate.
Ask Personally, Not Generically
A generic request for a review is far less effective than a personal one. When you ask a specific client to share their specific experience, it feels more genuine — and it gives the client a clear starting point for what to write.
For example, rather than saying simply ask for a review, you might say something like: your feedback on how the audit process went would mean a lot to us, and a Google review would help other businesses in The Gambia find us. This kind of personal, specific request is significantly more likely to result in a review than a general appeal.
Respond to Every Review You Receive
Responding to reviews — both positive and negative — demonstrates that your business is active and values client feedback. It also reassures potential clients who read your profile that any issues will be handled professionally.
For positive reviews, a brief, genuine response that acknowledges the specific feedback is more meaningful than a generic thank you. For negative reviews, a calm and professional response that acknowledges the concern and offers to resolve it can actually build trust with potential clients who see how the business handles criticism.
Businesses that respond to reviews also tend to rank better in local search results. Google interprets engagement as a positive signal about the quality and responsiveness of the business.
What Not to Do
Never offer incentives in exchange for reviews. This violates Google’s policies and can result in your profile being penalised or reviews being removed. Similarly, do not ask multiple people to leave reviews from the same location or device, as this can trigger Google’s spam filters.
The goal is genuine feedback from real clients — and the most reliable way to get that is to deliver excellent service and ask for it directly and personally.
One Simple Action
If you have clients who have had a positive experience with your business and have never left a review, reach out to one of them today. Share your Google review link and ask personally. That one conversation is often the start of a habit that builds your profile’s credibility consistently over time.
