The Hidden Tax on Every Organization

The Hidden Tax on Every Organization

By: John S. Morlu II, CPA

Most leaders can tell you their revenue.

They can tell you their expenses.

They can tell you their profit margin.

What they often cannot tell you is this:

What is the cost of not knowing what is happening inside the organization?

Every day, organizations pay an invisible tax.

Not a tax imposed by government.

A tax imposed by poor visibility.

A manager spends two hours chasing updates.

A project stalls because nobody escalated a blocker.

A proposal deadline gets closer because everyone assumed someone else was handling it.

A client issue sits unresolved for a week.

A leadership meeting is spent gathering information instead of making decisions.

Individually, these events seem small.

Collectively, they become one of the largest costs in the organization.

The problem is that traditional management systems were designed for a different era.

They track activities.

They track tasks.

They track hours.

They track meetings.

But leaders are not paid to manage activities.

Leaders are paid to produce outcomes.

And there is a growing gap between what organizations measure and what organizations actually need to know.

Consider the average manager.

They often know:

  • How many meetings occurred
  • How many emails were sent
  • How many tasks were assigned

Yet they struggle to answer:

  • What results were achieved?
  • What is at risk?
  • What is blocked?
  • What requires intervention?
  • What should leadership know today?

That gap creates what may be the most expensive phrase in business:

“I didn’t know.”

I didn’t know the project was behind.

I didn’t know the client was unhappy.

I didn’t know the deadline was at risk.

I didn’t know the team was struggling.

I didn’t know the issue had escalated.

The organizations that dominate the next decade will not necessarily work harder.

They will see sooner.

They will identify problems earlier.

They will escalate issues faster.

They will make decisions with better visibility.

Because competitive advantage is increasingly becoming a function of organizational awareness.

The question for every leader is simple:

How much of your organization is operating outside your field of vision right now?

The answer may be more expensive than you think.
